📘 Park Overview

Andrew Johnson's complex presidency (1865-69) illustrates the Constitution at work following the Civil War. As the President and Congress disagreed on Reconstruction methods, the Constitution served as their guide on balance of powers, vetoes, and impeachment. In the end, it evolved as a living document with pivotal amendments on freedom, citizenship, and voting rights - topics still vital today.

🌤 Weather Information

There are four distinct seasons in East Tennessee, but temperature and weather conditions can vary widely within those seasons. Spring and Fall are generally pleasant with frequent rain showers. Summer and Winter ranges can be extreme. The President's Homestead is not climate controlled and may be closed at times during excessive highs or lows in the summer and winter.

GPS The GPS setting for Andrew Johnson NHS may be listed as 121 Monument Ave, which is the park HQ in the National Cemetery. To arrive at the Visitor Center, use 101 North College Street, Greeneville, TN. Plane The closest airport is the Tri-Cities Regional Airport, 43 miles NE of Greeneville. From the airport, take I-81 South to exit 36 and follow the signs to Greeneville. Car From I-81S take exit 36 to Rt. 172 south to Greeneville. From I-81N take exit 23 to Rt. 11E north to Greeneville.

Temporary Visitor Contact Station at Andrew Johnson NHS. Park Closure
The Andrew Johnson NHS Visitor Center is currently closed for renovations. A temporary visitor contact station is located inside the Memorial Building (housing Johnson's original Tailor Shop), which is adjacent to the visitor center. Renovation work is expected to take approximately 5 months.

On August 23, the Andrew Johnson NHS Visitor Center will be closed for renovations. A temporary visitor contact station is located inside the Memorial Building adjacent to the visitor center. Renovation work is expected to take approximately 6 months.
Homestead Closure Park Closure
The historic Andrew Johnson Homestead is closed. All tours and access to this structure are cancelled until further notice.

Potential Closures of Homestead
The heat index in the Andrew Johnson Homestead has reached levels hazardous for visitors and staff. There is the potential that the house will be partially closed for tours. For information call the Visitor Center at 423-638-3551.
Notice to travelers to National Cemetery Caution
Due to the narrow roadway & tight turn, RVs, mobile homes, charter buses, delivery trucks, or vehicles with trailers are prohibited from the crest of Monument Hill. Check for information about parking at the Visitor Center upon your arrival.
Site Access Information
Be aware in your planning that I-40 in NC and I-26 in TN have been compromised due to the effects of Hurricane Helene. In addition, the Erwin Hwy (107) bridge leading into Greeneville was destroyed and is not expected to reopen until sometime in 2025.
Cemetery Closure Park Closure
The Andrew Johnson National Cemetery has closed all roads in the cemetery until further notice. The cemetery remains accessible to pedestrian traffic.
Cemetery Open with Restrictions Information
Andrew Johnson National Cemetery is now open with restrictions - the Monument Hill Stairway and Flagpole area remain closed due to storm damage.
New Year's Closure
The Andrew National Historic Site will be closed January 1, 2014 for New Year's Day; however, the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on that day. We will resume regular business hours on Thursday, January 2, 2014.
Visitor Center and Afternoon Tours Closures for Wednesday, July 23, Park Closure
The park visitor center will close at 12-noon on Wednesday, July 23. This closure will also extend to the 2 pm & 3 pm Guided Tours of the Andrew Johnson Homestead. Closure is due to required Safety Training for all park staff.

Due to visiting education groups, the 10 am and 11 am guided tours of the historic Andrew Johnson Homestead will not be available on Friday, July 11, 2025
2-hour delayed opening Park Closure
On Saturday, January 31, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site will be on a 2-hour delayed opening. Park will open at 11 am.
