🌤 Weather Information

Spring: Often windy and cool with lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's. Summer: Hot and humid with lows in the 60's and highs in the 80's. Fall: Warm with lows in the 50's and highs in the 70's. Winter: Damp cold and often windy. Lows in the 20's, highs in the 40's.

🚗 Directions

There are two entrances to Assateague Island National Seashore. Assateague's north entrance is at the end of Route 611, eight miles south of Ocean City, MD. The south entrance is at the end of Route 175, two miles east of Chincoteague, VA. There is no vehicle access between the two entrances on Assateague Island. Vehicles must return to the mainland to access either the north or south entrance.

Recreational Beach Access in VA District as of 8/22/25 Park Closure
All visitor amenities at the Virginia recreational beach are closed. This includes parking lots, beach access and Toms Cove Visitor Center. Damage to the parking areas is currently being assessed and closures will remain in place until further notice.
Virginia District - Service Road Closure Information
7-22-16 - The Service Road will be CLOSED on Monday, July 25th to ALL access (including North OSV zone, D Dyke bicycle access, and foot traffic) until the conclusion of the Sunrise Pony Walk.

Maryland District Visitor Center Schedule Change
The Maryland District Visitor Center will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in January and February of 2016. It will be open Thursdays-Mondays from 9 am - 5 pm. The Contact Station/Campground Office on the island will be open daily, 9 am - 5 pm.
National Seashore open on limited basis
MD district is open 7 am-6 pm on 11/3. All campgrounds are closed. State park in MD is open for day use. The pedestrian/cycling bridge is closed due to structural issues. VA district closed until further notice. Chincoteague Refuge open on limited basis.

1/8/17-Assateague Island Visitor Center and the Visitor Contact station in the MD district will be closed. Toms Cove Visitor Center in the VA district will be closed.
Bayside Backcountry Camping Fire Ban Caution
11-21-16 Based on recent fire danger predictions and high winds, campfires are prohibited in only the bayside backcountry campsites through Tuesday, 11-22-16. Bonfires on the beach and campfires in developed area campgrounds are not restricted.
Maryland District - OSV Status Information
1-24-17 Maryland District OSV is currently closed due to overwash. For updates, join the public Facebook page "Assateague MD OSV Closures"; updates are issued from the field.
New Fees Schedule Implemented
As of July 15th, 2015 a new fee schedule has been implemented. Entrance & camping fees in Maryland have changed. Kayaking fees in Maryland & Virginia have changed.

As of 3/1/13 both the MD & VA Districts are open. Assateague Island Visitor Center open daily from 9 am-5 pm. Toms Cove Visitor Center open daily from 9 am-4 pm.
Weather Closure Advisory Park Closure
2:15 pm Update 2/23/26 - The MD Visitor Center & Ranger Station will be closed Mon, Feb 23 & reopen Tues morning. Bayberry Drive, Old Ferry Landing and Bayside are plowed-The campground loops are partially plowed. Oceanside Drive and Most parking is not plowed. The stretch of Maryland 611 from the South Point Drive intersection to the bridge is still in deep snow & is not recommended for low clearance 2-wheel drive vehicles or motorcycles. As temperatures drop tonight, expect very icy conditions.

2/23/26 MD DISTRICT FULL PARK CLOSURE. 10:15am Update: The Maryland Unit of Assateague Island National Seashore is closed to the public today. This closure is to ensure the safety of visitors and the safety of workers on Maryland 611 clearing downed power lines and downed trees. Only emergency traffic will be allowed. This closure is in effect at least until 2 PM this afternoon, when it will be re-evaluated.

Come out to Assateague Island for a New Year’s Day hike!


Meet a ranger at 9:00 am at the start of the Life of the Dunes Trail to explore the natural changes that constantly reshape Assateague Island. This hike will be approximately one mile in length over varied terrain and take between 45 and 60 minutes.


Remember to dress warm, bring plenty of water and all your curiosity as we deep dive into Assateague’s past, present, and future!

Ash Wednesday Storm Anniversary Walk

The Ash Wednesday Storm battered the mid-Atlantic coast from March 5th thru the 9th in 1962, dramatically changing how Assateague Island would be used for generations to come. 

Assateague Island National Seashore invites you to join a Park Ranger for a one-mile guided walk. This walk will reflect upon the men and women who lived and worked on Assateague.

This walking tour is over pavement, boardwalk, and sand.

Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather.

 

Location: Program begins and ends at the Boathouse History Exhibit at the intersection of Bayberry Drive and Ferry Landing Road.
