📘 Park Overview

Millions of Americans and people around the world have ancestors who came through Ellis Island. The Main Immigration Building was the epicenter of one of the greatest migrations in modern history. Today, Ellis Island is a memorial to all who pursued the American dream and have made this nation their adopted home.

🌤 Weather Information

It is typically colder and more windy in New York Harbor than elsewhere in New York City. Winters are cold and damp. Spring and Fall can range from chilly to warm. Summers are warm to hot and humid.

🚗 Directions

Ellis Island is located in New York Harbor and can only be reached by ferry. Ferries are operated by Statue City Cruises and depart from The Battery in New York City or from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ.

The Registry Room, also known as the Great Hall, is where millions of immigrants were inspected. They were required to pass both a medical and legal inspection before being allowed to enter the United States.

Early Park Closure-Thursday Aug 21, 2025 Park Closure
Due to Hurricane Erin offshore with high tide at 7:47PM and high winds, the last visitor boats will depart from the Battery and Liberty State Park to the islands at 3:30PM. Last public boats back to the mainland are at 5:00PM (Liberty) and 5:15PM (Ellis).
Winter Storm Closure - February 23 & 24 Park Closure
Due to the severe weather and ongoing snow removal, the park will remain closed tomorrow, Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Please visit statuecitycruises.com for refund and ticketing information.
Liberty Island: Wheelchair Lift Near Top of Pedestal Temporarily Out of Service Information
To access the top of the pedestal, a 26 stair climb is now required while the wheelchair lift is out of service. Visitors with pedestal access unable to climb those stairs can still access the top of Fort Wood, which affords views of NY Harbor and NYC.

Delayed Opening - Saturday, December 27 - First Ferry 10:50 AM Park Closure
Due to a predicted winter storm, Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island will have a delayed opening on Saturday, December 27. The first ferry departs at 10:50 AM from The Battery (NY) and Liberty State Park (NJ).
