Spring: Temperatures may range from high 30s to low 50s (F). Rain and sun are equally common. Summer: Temperatures usually range from 65 F to 90 F. Fall: Temperatures from 70 F in early autumn to 40 F later in the season may be expected. Winter: Temperatures in the 30s (F) are common, with below freezing temperatures possible.

Fire Island National Seashore Headquarters are located in Patchogue, New York, on Long Island. Fire Island National Seashore Headquarters: Via Long Island Expressway/I-495: Take Exit 61 (Patchogue-Holbrook Road) to Waverly Ave. Head south on Waverly Ave to West Ave. Turn right onto Laurel Street. Via NY-27: Take Exit 52 onto Waverly Ave. Head south on Waverly Ave to West Ave. Turn right onto Laurel Street.

The following sites on Fire Island will be temporarily closed from 1/27-1/29/2026: Trails and Burma Road at the Fire Island Light Station, Sailors Haven, Carrington, Talisman/Barrett Beach, Blue Point, and Watch Hill.
Wilderness Visitor Center Closed on 2/25/2026 Park Closure
Due to current weather conditions and past heavy snowfall, Suffolk County has closed the Smith Point Bridge. As a result of the closure, the Visitor Center will be closed for the day.
Otis Pike Wilderness Visitor Center Closed Sunday, 1/25/26 Park Closure
The Otis Pike Wilderness Visitor Center (Smith Point) will be closed Sunday, January 25, 2026 due to inclement weather.
Avian Influenza (HPAI) Suspected in Dead Birds in Seashore Areas Caution
Dead birds observed along beaches and marsh shorelines may have been infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) advises the public to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and mammals that may be infected with HPAI. Pets should be secured at all times and kept away from all wild animals. See the link below for more information.

Temporary closures of trails and Burma Road, January 23, 2026 Park Closure
On January 23, 2026, there will be temporary closures of trails and Burma Road at the Fire Island Light Station, Sailors Haven, Carrington, Talisman/Barrett Beach, Blue Point, and Watch Hill.
Possession or use of marijuana inside Fire Island National Seashore is prohibited. Information
While New York provides for regulated possession and use of marijuana, it remains an illegal drug under federal law and enforced within National Park units.
Update: All Seashore Sites Will Be Closed On Monday, 1/26/2026 Park Closure
The Fire Island Lighthouse, William Floyd Estate and Patchogue Headquarters will be closed on Monday, 1/26/2026 due to inclement weather.
Beach Driving Access Suspended at Sunset 2/22/26 Due to Winter Storm Park Closure
Due to anticipated severe winter weather, reduced visibility, and above-normal high tides resulting in unsafe beach conditions, beach driving access will be suspended at sunset on Sunday, February 22, 2026. Beach conditions will continue to be monitored, and access will reopen as soon as conditions allow.
Raccoons Within Federally-managed Areas Observed Exhibiting Distemper Symptoms Caution
Visitors are advised to avoid potential human and pet encounters with wildlife including raccoons. Raccoons with Canine Distemper Virus may appear lethargic or disoriented. CDV cannot be transmitted to humans, but can be transmitted to unvaccinated dogs.

Fire Island Lighthouse closure Sunday, January 25, 2026 Park Closure
The Fire Island Lighthouse will be closed on Sunday, January 25, 2026, due to forecasted snow and hazardous travel conditions.
Pet Restrictions, Beach Driving Closures in Effect March 15 through Labor Day Park Closure
To protect threatened nesting shorebirds, pets are prohibited in the Otis Pike Wilderness and on federally-managed ocean beaches. Beach driving is closed at Lighthouse Beach, Sailors Haven and the Wilderness area.

Boardwalks at Watch Hill Partially Closed Park Closure
Due to storm damage, partial closure of boardwalks at Watch Hill Nature Trail are in effect.
Talisman-Barrett Beach Dock Closed Due to Ice Damage; Reduced Services for Summer Season Park Closure
Due to damage from winter ice, the Talisman-Barrett Beach dock is closed to all public use until further notice. No lifeguards will be present during the summer season. Visitors should pack out trash and expect reduced restroom services.

Fire Island Lighthouse Closed For Structural Inspections 3/24-3/26 Park Closure
The Fire Island Lighthouse as well as the surrounding area will be closed from Tuesday, March 24 to Thursday, March 26 in order for crews to perform structural inspections. The lighthouse will reopen on Friday, March 27.
Smith Point Bridge Following Single Lane Traffic Pattern Information
Visitors driving to access the Otis Pike Wilderness and Smith Point County Park should be aware that the Smith Point Bridge is open currently following a single lane traffic pattern. There is a 15 ton vehicle weight limit.

Join us in the Lens Building for a nature themed poetry reading and workshop to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day 2026!

Location: Fire Island Lighthouse. Park at Robert Moses Field 5 and walk east for 0.6 mile on boardwalks to the lighthouse.

Lighthouse: Lantern Light Tour

6:15 pm to 7:45 pm (tours leave at 15 minute intervals). Meet at Robert Moses State Park Field 5 (east side). Enjoy an escorted lantern light walk along the beach and to the lens building, as stationed interpreters unfold the stories of the Fire Island Light Station. Reservations are required. $15 FILPS members/ $25 non-members. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight for your walk back to the parking field. The tower will remain open until 7:30 pm at regular fees.

William Floyd Estate: Old Mastic House Exhibit Viewing

See the new Old Mastic House 2026 exhibit celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding. Visitors will see objects on display from all eras of the Estate's history, from the colonial period until the 20th century.

The Old Mastic House will be open for exhibit viewing Wednesday-Sunday from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM. Visitors interested in seeing the Old Mastic House exhibit should check in with staff at the house’s front porch upon their arrival to arrange an entry time. Slots are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. No visitors will be admitted to the exhibit past 4:30 PM.

Location: 245 Park Drive, Mastic Beach, NY. From the parking area, walk east on the boardwalk to the Old Mastic House and check in with a ranger on the front porch.

Lighthouse: 250 200 Celebration Evening Presentation Series Two Anniversaries, One Story (Part 1)

Join historic actor Joseph Smith as he portrays William Floyd, Long Island’s only signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and Stephen Pleasonton, a national hero who saved those documents in 1814. Limited occupancy, donations accepted.
