However, during the Civil War, new technology proved its superiority over these forts. Using rifled cannons, the U.S.
Army compelled the Confederate garrison inside Fort Pulaski to surrender. The siege was a landmark experiment in the history of military science and invention.

Candle Lantern Holiday Program
Fort Pulaski National Monument is a historic site located on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. The monument is renowned for its well-preserved mid-19th century fort, which played a significant role in the American Civil War. Constructed between 1829 and 1847, the fort was thought to be impenetrable until Union forces successfully breached its walls in 1862 using rifled cannon fire. This event marked a turning point in military technology and served as the precursor to the emancipation proclamation of 1863. Today, the national monument offers visitors a glimpse into 19th century military architecture and history, as well as beautiful natural surroundings and wildlife.
Celebrate this holiday season at Fort Pulaski with our cherished Candle Lantern event. Enjoy an evening tour of the Fort illuminated by candlelight and oil lamps. Discover how Christmas was celebrated by various inhabitants of the Savannah fort, from Union and Confederate soldiers to lighthouse keepers and the Civilian Conservation Corps. Experience a guided tour, savor hot cider, eggnog, and cookies, partake in a special nighttime cannon firing. Join us for this unique chance to embrace the festive season while journeying through history.
