Special Weather Statement issued April 19 at 5:00PM EDT by NWS Wakefield VA

Effective: Apr 19, 2026 5:00pm
Expires: Apr 20, 2026 5:00am

The combination of low relative humidity values in the 20 to 30
percent range, dry fuels, and gusty northwest winds will result
in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires across much
of central and eastern Virginia Monday afternoon.

Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential
ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be
sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses
and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread
quickly.

Virginia residents are reminded that open burning is prohibited
before 4 PM EDT each day through April 30th.

⚠️ Freeze Watch (Severe)

Freeze Watch issued April 19 at 1:20PM EDT until April 21 at 10:00AM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC

Effective: Apr 19, 2026 1:20pm
Expires: Apr 19, 2026 9:30pm

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 possible, especially
in outlying areas away from larger bodies of water.

* WHERE...The District of Columbia. In Maryland, Anne Arundel,
Prince Georges, Calvert, Charles, and St. Marys Counties. In
Virginia, King George and Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria
Counties.

* WHEN...From late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor
plumbing.

⚠️ Special Weather Statement (Moderate)

Special Weather Statement issued April 19 at 5:33PM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC

Effective: Apr 19, 2026 5:33pm
Expires: Apr 20, 2026 3:00am

The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 10 to 12 percent
relative humidities around 20 to 25 percent, and frequent wind
gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the
rapid spread of wildfires on Monday. Even with some light rainfall
today, there was adequate sun and gusty winds this afternoon to
rapidly dry fuels once again ahead of Monday. Further expansion
north may be needed in the future, but uncertainty with
cloudcover, along with about twice as much rainfall, may make
things a bit less favorable north of this statement. An updated
will be issued early Monday morning.

Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette
butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate
containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any
equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry
grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could
easily ignite and spread fire quickly.

Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about
wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and
education, please visit your state forestry or environmental
protection website.

Join Dr. Kathleen Bartoloni-Tuazon for an engaging exploration of one of the earliest and most revealing debates in American history—the 1789 controversy over the president’s title. Drawing from her book For Fear of an Elective King, she will uncover why Congress and the public fiercely argued over whether George Washington should be addressed as “His Highness” or simply “President.” Her talk will highlight how this seemingly ceremonial question exposed deep anxieties about power and the fragility of the new republic.  Attendees will learn how Washington’s own choices shaped the presidency.
