📘 Park Overview

Immerse yourself in one of the longest caves in the world. With over 220 miles of mapped and surveyed passages, this underground wilderness appeals to human curiosity. Its splendor is revealed through fragile formations and glimpses of brilliant color. Its maze of passages lures explorers, and its scientific wealth remains a mystery. This resource is truly a jewel in the National Park Service.

Weather in the Black Hills varies significantly throughout the year and may be drastically different from the northern hills to the southern hills. The temperatures listed are for average lows to average highs in the location of Custer, South Dakota. Spring ~ Temp. Range of 29°F to 53°F / Summer ~ Temp. Range of 54°F to 80°F / Fall ~ Temp. Range of 33°F to 58°F / Winter ~ Temp. Range of 14°F to 37°F The yearly average rain is 19 in., with May being the wettest month. The yearly average snow is 48 in.

🚗 Directions

By car: Jewel Cave National Monument is located 13 miles west of Custer, South Dakota and 24 miles east of Newcastle, Wyoming on U.S. Highway 16. The monument is about 54 miles from Rapid City, South Dakota via U.S. Highway 16 / 385. By plane: The nearest major airport, Rapid City Regional Airport, is 63 miles away.

Fee-free day on Monday, August 4th Information
To celebrate the Great American Outdoors Act Monday, August 4th Scenic & Discovery Tours will be free. Check recreation.gov for reservations. Or come to the ticket kiosk as close to 8:00 a.m. on the 4th for first-come, first-serve cave tour tickets.
Cave Tour Reservations Information
Advance cave tour reservations up until April 30th are available. Book ahead. Reservations full? Choose a day to come early to the park as close to opening as possible to purchase a same day cave tour ticket at the park.

Visitors are required to wear completely enclosed shoes if participating in a cave tour, like tennis shoes, sneakers or hiking boots. Any type of sandals or shoes with any openings are NOT acceptable.
Visitor Center Closed Due to Power Outage - No Cave Tours Offered Park Closure
The Jewel Cave National Monument visitor center has been without power since 12/18 due to an extreme windstorm and cannot offer cave tours. We will update this alert when we again have power and can reopen the visitor center and resume cave tours. We appreciate your patience.
Visitor Center Restrooms Information
The visitor center restrooms are currently being remodeled. Restrooms are available in a trailer just behind the restroom remodel.
No Cave Tours September 8-12 Due to Generator Installation Park Closure
The park will not offer cave tours September 8-12. The visitor center will be open except on the 11th due to power outages. The park will be open for hiking and patio talks. Cave tours are planned to resume on the 13th on a first-come first-serve basis.

Weather conditions and possible closure for Monday, December 26 Caution
There is potential for blizzard conditions on Sunday, Dec. 25, with 5 to 8 inches of snow expected and high winds. Please call the Monument at 605-673-8300 before travelling to Jewel Cave on Monday, December 26 - the Monument may be closed.

Park Events

Jewel Cave National Monument Turns 118!
February 7th is the 118th anniversary of Jewel Cave officially becoming a federally protected site, Jewel Cave National Monument.   To celebrate this the park will host a free Happy Birthday Lantern-led Scenic Tour at 12:15 pm on Saturday, February 7th. This will take up to 20 visitors on a free tour through the Scenic Tour using only lantern-light. All visitors who join the tour must be able to walk the 734 stairs unassisted and carry the park-provided lantern. Attendees must also wear fully enclosed shoes.   Tickets for this tour will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis at the park visitor center beginning at 8:30 am on Saturday, February 7th.   The park will also celebrate by having cake, stickers and Junior Ranger station sponsored by the park's cooperation association, the Black Hills Parks and Forest Association. The cake cutting will be at approximately 1:45 p.m.
