Spread across a wild landscape offering spectacular views of Katahdin, Katahdin Woods and Waters invites discovery of its rivers, streams, woods, flora, fauna, geology, and the night skies that have attracted humans for millennia.

🌤 Weather Information

Northern Maine experiences all four seasons. Summer temperatures range from 45-90F (7-30C). Fall temperatures range from 30-70F (-1-21C). Typically, the first frost is in mid-October and first snowfall begins in November and can continue through April with an average accumulation of 73 inches (185 cm). Winter temperatures range from 14-35F (-10 - 2C). Spring temperatures range from 30-70F (-1-21C).

🚗 Directions

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is located in north central Maine. Drive approximately 1.5 hours north of Bangor, Maine to reach Route 11 (Katahdin Woods and Waters Scenic Byway). Route 11 is the main route to the entrances to the park. Take Route 11 to Route 159 and Grand Lake Road to access the North Entrance. Follow Route 11 to Swift Brook Road to enter the South Entrance. Take Route 11 to Route 159 and American Thread Road to access the Seboeis Parcel.

* WHEN...From Wednesday morning through Thursday morning.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions
could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Northern areas are most likely to see mostly
snow and sleet, while southern areas will see greater potential
for impactful freezing rain. Uncertainty on the exact cutoff
location of different precipitation types remains high.

Increased Logging Activity on Swift Brook Road Caution
Logging trucks and other large machinery will be active on Swift Brook Road for an undetermined amount of time. Please use caution when driving. Always pull over for logging trucks, and wait until dust has cleared to continue moving.

Impassable Bridge Near Big Spring Brook Hut Danger
There is an impassable collapsed bridge near Big Spring Brook Hut located at the north section of the monument (46.0333633333, -68.7807583333). This area is impassable by foot traffic and bike.
Logging activity on Swift Brook Road Caution
As of Monday, September 26th, logging trucks and equipment will be increasing their use of the Swift Brook Road access in the the National Monument. This alert will remain active until further notice.
Bridge Repairs and Closures Park Closure
Seboeis River Bridge will be closed to traffic August 27-29 for repairs. This will impact travel into the Seboeis parcel via Charlie's Rd. A bridge over Ragged Brook will be closed September 2-4 for repairs and impact travel towards Philpott Bridge.
Ongoing Road Construction at Haskell Gate Caution
Ongoing construction between North and Haskell Gates may prevent vehicles from passing. Please be prepared to park at the North parking area. The road is passable on foot.
Expect delays on Sand Bank Stream bridge Information
The Whetstone bridge work is complete. There will be short delays for the repair of the Sand Bank Stream bridge during the week of September 4th.
Hunting Season Begins August 23rd Caution
Hunting season is upon us! Please stay alert and be mindful of the rights of lawful hunters. Hunting is permitted only East of the East Branch of the Penobscot River, but it is advised to wear high visibility clothing on all monument land.

Katahdin Overlook Closure Park Closure
The Katahdin Overlook is currently closed for construction. Visitors are not permitted in the overlook area due to construction hazards. It is still possible to access anything else on the loop road.
Bridge Work in Progress: Expect Delays heading to/from Katahdin Loop Road Information
Bridges on the access road to the Katahdin Loop Drive will be under repair starting on 8/30. Visitor can expect delays of up to 30 minutes as crews work on re-treading the bridges. Bridges will be fully open for Labor Day weekend, starting 9/3.
The Swift Brook Rd into the national monument will be closed on September 12th Information
The culvert replacement 2.25 miles in from Route 11 on the Swift Brook Road is scheduled to take place on Monday 12 September at 7 am. That part of the road will be closed for the day. It will be reopened by 6 pm that night.

NPS Passport Stamp locations Information
Because of limited winter Welcome Center hours, official NPS Passport Stamps for the Monument have been placed in nearby communities for visitor convenience: Katahdin Chamber of Commerce - Millinocket, ME, and Shin Pond Village - Mt Chase, ME
Loop Road Closure Caution
The 14-mile Katahdin Loop Rd in the southern section of the monument has been closed due to snow and ice conditions. Loop Road may reopen if weather conditions improve. Loop Road closes for the season on Monday, November 14th.
Increased Logging Activity Caution
Logging trucks and other large machinery will be active on portions of Swift Brook and Roberts Road for an undetermined amount of time. Please use caution when driving. Always pull over for logging trucks and only continue driving when it is deemed safe.
High Fire Danger Caution
The monument is currently under a high fire danger warning issued by the Maine Forest Service. Please exercise caution when lighting a fire, and make sure the fire is completely out before leaving. Fires are allowed in designated areas only.

Katahdin Overlook Construction Closure Park Closure
The Katahdin Overlook is currently closed for construction. Visitors are not permitted in the overlook area due to construction hazards. All other locations on the Loop Road are accessible by motor vehicles seasonally and by foot year round.
Loop Road and North Entrance Seasonal Closures Park Closure
The Loop Road and North Entrance are closed to motorized vehicles until May 2026. These areas are accessible by foot, bike, ski, and snowshoe. Restrooms and campsites are accessible but not maintained in the off-season. Learn more about winter recreation and seasonal closures below.
