📘 Park Overview

The stories of people and copper in the Keweenaw Peninsula have been intertwined for more than 7,000 years. Indigenous peoples made copper into tools and trade items. Investors and immigrants arrived in the 1800s in a great mineral rush, developing thriving industries and cosmopolitan communities. Though the mines have since closed, their mark is still visible on the land and people.

🌤 Weather Information

Summer: Keweenaw summers are usually mild, with average highs in the 70s, but can reach into the 80s and 90s. Nighttime temperatures are typically cool, but can also dip into the 40s or stay in the 70s. Summer months are dry, with occasional rain or severe thunderstorms. Winter: Again influenced by Lake Superior, winter temperatures are mild with highs in the 20s. Cold spells can occur with subzero temperatures. Lake effect snow is common, and 300 inches of snow can fall in a season.

Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission Meeting

The Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission will convene for its regular quarterly meeting at 1:00pm on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. The meeting will be held in-person at the Keweenaw National Historical Park headquarters building at the corner of US41 and Red Jacket Road.


The meeting will include an update on the work of the Commission during the last quarter, discussion of the upcoming year’s budget and plans and projects to be undertaken over the next year. The Commission will also be announcing the start of this year’s Keweenaw Heritage Grant cycle, with information about applications, eligibility, etc. made available to the public.


The Keweenaw NHP Advisory Commission, paneled by citizens appointed by the Secretary of the Interior, represents the public and works collaboratively with the National Park Service to advise and assist with managing the resources of Keweenaw National Historical Park. Advisory Commission Meeting

The Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission will convene for its regular quarterly meeting at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. The meeting will be held in-person at Keweenaw National Historical Park Headquarters building, located at 25970 Red Jacket Road. This is the corner of Red Jacket Road and Hwy. US-41 in Calumet.

The meeting will include an update on the work of the Commission and the National Park Service during the last quarter, discussion of plans and projects for this summer and time for questions, requests, and comments from members of the public.

National Trails Day Hike

Celebrate National Trails Day with a step back into Keweenaw history!

Join Keweenaw National Historical Park at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 6, 2026, for a guided hike through the historic landscapes of Old Victoria, a Keweenaw Heritage Site near Rockland, MI. Hiking along a portion of the North Country Trail, you’ll explore the ruins of the Victoria Mine and mining community while learning how copper shaped the Keweenaw Peninsula.

This free public program begins near the Old Victoria parking area. Prepare for an approximately two hour hike, covering about 1.5 miles along uneven and rocky trails and roads with moderate elevation changes. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and long pants and are encouraged to bring water and insect protection.

Special World War I stops and stories will be featured along the route, connecting the Copper Country’s mining communities to the global conflict and the people who experienced it. 

Following the hike, enjoy a special pre-season tour of the restored miners’ cabins at Old Victoria. This guided hike is organized by Old Victoria Restoration and Keweenaw National Historical Park.
