On Saturday, January 24th, join Park Ranger Darian Kath for a moccasin making workshop at Knife River Indian Villages NHS.

This program will provide an overview of Native American footwear styles with a focus on plains side-seam moccasins. Participants will be provided with materials and instruction to create their own moccasins.

The program will start at 12:30 pm CST and will be in the Visitor Center.

It is FREE of charge and all supplies will be provided. Duration will be approximately 3 hours.

This event is part of Vinterfest with our friends at Northern Plains National Heritage Area!

Come learn step-by-step instructions on designing and completing a small parfleche envelope. Creating a design, coloring and sewing together will be done with the materials provided. Join Billy Maxwell to learn the method of processing bison cow hides and how to do quillwork like the Hidatsa. For 30 years, Billy has been using Buffalo Bird Woman's notes to hone his hide tanning skills. Presentation will take place at the picnic shelter next to the Visitory Center. No reservations are required.

Join park staff to learn about Hidatsa life from the words of Buffalo Bird Woman (Waheenee or Maxidiwiac), born at Knife River in 1839. Participants will learn about a specific aspect of life in the villages and then do an activity. Activities include beading, winter count robes, parfleche envelopes, and Hidatsa games. Program will take place in the picnic shelter next to the Visitor Center. Registration is required to ensure proper supplies. Beading on July 8 has a maximum capacity of 15 participants. Join us for traditional flute music and storytelling with Keith Bear. O'Mashi Ryu Ta - ("Northern Lights"), a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes in Fort Berthold, North Dakota, is an awared-winning musician, storyteller and flute maker. He is known all over the world and uses his flute to tell stories. Presentation will take place at the picnic shelter next to the Visitor Center. The event is for all ages, and free. No reservations are required.

Join retired park ranger Marvin Dawes, member of the Crow Nation, for a presentation on Crow and Hidatsa history, including tribal history and place names. The presentation will also feature information on Sacagawea and her Crow connection. Presentation will take place at the picnic shelter next to the Visitor Center. The event is for all ages and free. No reservations are required.

Archaelogist and Potter Wade Haakenson will be here to give an overview of Native pottery history and techniques. Visitors will then have the opportunity to participate in making their own pots! Dr. Lanny Real Bird will be here to present on Plains Indian Sign Language. Dr. Real Bird is a native language educator, instructor, consultant, and planner.
