Designation: National Historical Park
Location: Vermont
Walk through one of Vermont's most beautiful landscapes under the shade of the Mount Tom Forest, the oldest continuously managed scientific forest in the United States. This is a landscape of loss, recovery, and conservation. This is a story of stewardship, of people taking care of places - sharing an enduring connection to land and a sense of hope for the future.
The weather in Vermont is dramatic and varied depending on location, terrain, distance from a body of water like Lake Champlain, and elevation and can change from year to year. In the Woodstock area, summer daily high temperatures range between 60 to 80 degrees, with some days reaching into the 90s. Winter is Vermont's longest season and temps in winter vary more than those in summer. Common to experience freezing temperatures from Nov to March, many sub-zero days, seasonal snowfall averages 80 inches.
Shared parking is at the Billings Farm & Museum. If using a GPS, please enter "Billings Farm & Museum". If you'd like to watch the park film, begin your visit at the Billings Farm & Museum Visitor Center. To enter Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, take the paved path to the right of the Billings Farm & Museum Visitor Center, walk up and cross the street, and then take the left fork to reach the National Park Carriage Barn Visitor Center. Join natural resources staff to help monitor hemlocks for hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) presence at both Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP and Saint Gaudens NHP. Weāll be checking hemlock branches at 12 different monitoring locations at each park, so be prepared to hike over rough, steep, and uneven terrain in the snow. Please dress appropriately for outdoor weather. Bring a water bottle, snack, and snowshoes/microspikes if possible. This event will continue snow or shine!
Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is an invasive aphid-like insect that feeds on hemlock trees, resulting in the treeās defoliation and eventual death. While HWA has been confirmed in Windsor County, VT and Sullivan County, NH, we have yet to detect HWA at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP or Saint Gaudens NHP. Considering the substantial risks that HWA poses to our hemlocks, we conduct annual monitoring at our parks. Any early detection will allow us to protect these invaluable trees and we need your help!
We will have adult and childrenās snowshoes as well as microspikes available if needed.
