📘 Park Overview

Maggie Lena Walker devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. As a bank president, newspaper editor, and fraternal leader, Walker served as an inspiration of pride and progress. Today, Walker’s home is preserved as a tribute to her enduring legacy of vision, courage, and determination.

Coming west on I-64, take exit 75 to 3rd street, turn right on Leigh St., park on 2nd street. Coming south on I-95, take exit 79 east onto I-64 east to Norfolk, then follow directions coming from the west. Coming east on I-64, take exit 190 to 5th St., Downtown, continue straight on 5th St., turn right on Jackson St., left on 3rd St., right on Leigh St., then right on 2nd St. Coming north on I-95, take exit 76A for Chamberlayne Ave, turn left on Chamberlayne Pkwy, left on Leigh St., then left on 2nd St.

Walking in Maggie Walker's Footsteps: A Women's Wealth & Ownership Symposium
Over a century ago, Maggie L. Walker declared, "Let us have a bank that will take the nickels and turn them into dollars." She built more than a financial institution - she built access, ownership, and economic dignity for Black families.   Saturday, April 18, Maggie L. Walker NHS and Peoples Bank invite you to a financial literacy symposium for women that continues that legacy. Join us for a powerful day of education, strategy, and sisterhood held at the site of the bank that Maggie Walker once chaired.   Together we will:
  • Build strong financial foundations through budgeting, credit positioning, and debt strategy
  • Explore wealth pathways in homeownership, entrepreneurship, and career growth
  • Gain hands-on support through credit and capital clinics
  • Develop a personal 90-Day Wealth Plan
  • Connect with women who are committed to ownership and generational impact

Maggie L. Walker's 162nd Birthday Celebration

Join us, July 10-11, 2026 for a celebration of the life of Maggie L. Walker, visionary civil rights activist and civic leader.  

Celebrate Walker family stories through Oral History House Tours featuring her grandchildren’s voices. Saturday afternoon, from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., enjoy an Open House Hour exploring the beautifully restored first‑floor rooms of the Walker House.

There will be a Maggie L. Walker Day of Service at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, July 11, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.  See link for registration.   

 

Location: Tours will begin at the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site Visitor Center at 600 N. 2nd St., Richmond, VA 23219. The clean-up event on July 11 will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, 50 Evergreen Rd.
