📘 Park Overview

In the early morning hours of February 27, 1776, Loyalist forces charged across a partially dismantled Moores Creek Bridge. Beyond the bridge, nearly 1,000 North Carolina Patriots waited quietly with cannons and muskets poised to fire. This battle marked the last broadsword charge by Scottish Highlanders and the first significant victory for the Patriots in the American Revolution.

Prescribed Burn at Moores Creek National Battlefield Caution
Moores Creek National Battlefield will be conducting a controlled burn in the park starting on Thursday, March 19 and continue through Friday March 20, 2026. The burn will be taking place in the savannah unit and the northeast section of the park, which borders Moores Creek Missionary Baptist Church. The entire burn will cover around 25 acres. Please be on the lookout for park staff and trail signs advising you of trail closures during the burn window. All trail closures are temporary.
Moores Creek Visitor Center Open Tuesday-Saturday and Park Grounds Open Seven Days Per Week Information
The Moores Creek Visitor Center/Bookstore is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am until 5 pm. Park grounds are open seven days per week from 9 am until 5 pm.
Moores Creek National Battlefield has reopened. Information
After an inspection of park conditions, Moores Creek National Battlefield has reopened as of 2:00 pm on Tuesday February 3. This includes all park trails and buildings.
Lighting and Maintaining Fires Information Information
Fires are permitted only in designated areas and under specific conditions. A fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other materials including, but not limited to, flammable liquids, garbage, fireworks, plastics, aerosol canisters, batteries, or other manufactured or synthetic materials, is prohibited.
Be Prepared for your Visit Information
Before hiking at Moores Creek, make sure to bring all your necessary medications, sunscreen, bottled water for hikes, loose fitting clothes for hiking, and any other items you may need.

Junior Ranger Day
Come and join us for a special Junior Ranger Day celebration. The program takes place Saturday April 25 from 10 am until 3 pm. A variety of colonial hands-on demonstrations will be offered throughout the day, such as colonial candlemaking, cartridge rolling and making corn husk dolls. We will also have demonstrators sharing about naval stores, blacksmithing, toys and games, and more!   We will also be offering a special guided tour of the Tar Heel Trail focused on the production of tar, pitch and turpentine. Join Moores Creek Intern John Bloh for these tours at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm. This 30–45-minute tour will focus on North Carolina's role in the naval stores industry. The tour will meet at the intersection of the Tar Heel and History Trails. Just look for the guided tour sign!   Come and earn your badge for the Moores Creek Junior Ranger booklet, as well as the Women of the American Revolution Junior Ranger patch. We will also be debuting a new joint Junior Ranger booklet with Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park, where you can earn a special patch. If you complete all three booklets, you can earn your Moores Creek Master Junior Ranger badge!   All activities are free of charge!   We hope to see you here!
