Celebrate Women's History Month in Nicodemus!

Nicodemus offered the opportunity for not just Black men, but Black women to establish new lives for themselves. Women paid attention to the needs of Nicodemus and established businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and millineries. They also took advantage of the Homestead Act and joined the ranks of over 100 Black land-owning homesteaders in Graham County, proving their ability to farm and support their families.

On Saturday, March 21st, join Rangers LueCreasea Horne and Valerie Blubaugh in celebrating Women’s History Month and learn more about these women homesteaders and business-owners throughout the history of Nicodemus.

This program will be at 2:00 pm central time and will be hosted in-person at the Nicodemus Township Hall and Visitor Center and virtually on Microsoft Teams.

Nicodemus National Historic Site will host “Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy,” a traveling exhibition from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Visitors can view the exhibits inside the Township Hall for duration of the event.

This exhibit is a part of Nicodemus National Historic Site’s celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Nicodemus NHS is one of 46 Kansas venues collaborating with Humanities Kansas to host “Declaration 1776” in 2026. For a full schedule of locations and dates, visit humanitieskansas.org. The “Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy” traveling exhibition is made possible in Kansas with support from the Kansas Arts Commission and the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund.

The 148th Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration is from July 30th to August 2nd. The celebration is a multiple day event with different activities happening in the town. This event is organized and hosted by Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration LLC.

The visitor center at the Township Hall will be open from 9AM to 5PM and during other events hosted in the building. Be sure to check out nicodemushomecoming.org for a full schedule of events and other information!

Ever wonder what the Homecoming-Emancipation Celebration looked like over the years? Stop by the Township Hall and check out an exhibit showcasing newspaper clippings describing and advertising the celebration over nearly 150 years.
