Designation: Wild & Scenic River

Location: Tennessee

📘 Park Overview

The Obed Wild and Scenic River looks much the same today as it did when the first white settlers strolled its banks in the late 1700s. While meagerly populated due to poor farming soil, the river was a hospitable fishing and hunting area for trappers and pioneers. Today, the Obed stretches along the Cumberland Plateau and offers visitors a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.

🌤 Weather Information

The weather along the Cumberland Plateau can be best described as unpredictable. Each season brings its own weather patterns. Summers are generally hot and humid, with high temperatures sometimes eclipsing 90 degrees. The low temperatures in winter often dip below freezing. Spring sees the most amount of precipitation, but rainfall can occur in various amounts throughout the year.

Cumberland Trail Work Day
The National Park Service, Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning and Cumberland Trail State Park will be hosting the annual Cumberland Trail workday on Saturday, February 14th. Volunteers should meet at Rock Creek Campground at 10 a.m. (ET). The event is expected to conclude around 3 p.m. (ET).   Participants will work on the 2.5-mile section of the Cumberland Trail between Rock Creek Campground and Alley Ford. Work will concentrate on routine trail maintenance such as cleaning out clogged water bars, removing down logs and limbs, cutting back brush along the trail and establishing the original trail base in some areas. After completing the trail work, participants may enjoy a late lunch by the river before hiking back to the campground.   Participants should wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring work gloves, shovels, loppers, clippers, and small bow saws or folding saws. Chainsaws are not allowed. Some hand tools will be available at the event. Volunteers should bring clothing appropriate for weather conditions, and plenty of water, snacks, and a lunch. Also, sunscreen and bug spray may be needed. In the event of bad weather, this work day may be rescheduled.
