📘 Park Overview

Welcome to Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. This park is a prehistoric American Indian site, where many different American Indian cultures occupied this land for thousands of years. American Indians first came here during the Paleo-Indian Period hunting Ice Age mammals. Around 900 CE, the Mississippian Period began, and people constructed mounds for their elite, which remain here today.

🌤 Weather Information

Macon has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). The average high temperature ranges from 46 to 58°F (7.7 to 14.4°C) in January and 82 to 91°F (27.7 to 32.7°C) in July. Winters are mild. Temps ranging from 30 degrees to 50 degrees. Spring is mild but wet. Temps ranging from 50 degrees to low 70 degrees. Summers are hot and very humid. Temp ranging from upper 80 degrees to 100 degrees. Fall is pleasant. Temps ranging from 60 to 80 degrees.

Park Monitoring Winter Weather for Potential Closure on 1/31/2026 Caution
Chances are increasing that winter weather will impact our area, bringing moderate travel impacts. Currently, the park is scheduled to be open 1/31/26, however park staff are closely monitoring the storm and may issue a park closure if conditions deteriorate to ensure visitor and staff safety as they travel home. Updates to park operations will be made on the website and on the park social media accounts.

River Trail periodically closed under I-16 Caution
The section of the River Trail beneath Interstate 16 is closed during bridge construction when pedestrian safety is at risk and remains open when no significant hazards are present.
Delayed opening Jan 18, 2026 due to winter weather conditions Park Closure
Due to the forecasted winter weather in the morning, Ocmulgee Mounds NHP will have a delayed opening on Jan 18, 2026. The park gates and VC will open at 12:30 pm. Staff will assess conditions in the morning and any changes to this plan will be posted to our Facebook page. The park will close at 5:00 pm.

BOARDWALK CLOSED along the River Trail Park Closure
Due to structural issues, the boardwalk along the river trail is closed until further notice. Access to the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and river is not available due to this closure. This closure does not affect access to any of the mound sites.

Learn more about the mound-building culture and see the 1,000-year-old clay floor inside the ceremonial council chamber.

The 1/8 mile walk to the Earth Lodge includes a paved decline and incline which may be difficult for some guests.

The space inside the Earth Lodge is accessed through a 20-foot-long tunnel and is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

Location: The tour begins at the park visitor center.

Join a Park Ranger and take a journey back in time to more than 12,000 years to the Ice Age animals and the people who hunted them.

We will explore Paleoindian weapons and hunting strategies and talk about how these people may not have been much different than the people of today.
