📘 Park Overview

With its incredible range of precipitation and elevation, diversity is the hallmark of Olympic National Park. Encompassing nearly a million acres, the park protects a vast wilderness, thousands of years of human history, and several distinctly different ecosystems, including glacier-capped mountains, old-growth temperate rain forests, and over 70 miles of wild coastline. Come explore!

🌤 Weather Information

Summers tend to be fair and warm, with high temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees F. July, August and September are the driest months, with heavier precipitation during the rest of the year. While winters are mild at lower elevation, snowfall can be heavy in the mountains. It is common for different weather conditions to exist within the park at the same time. At any time of year, visitors should come prepared for a variety of conditions.

🚗 Directions

You can reach Olympic National Park via the I-5 corridor or by any one of the quieter state roadways. Once you arrive on the Olympic Peninsula connect to Hwy 101 to reach any destinations in and around Olympic National Park. From Olympia: take I-5 to Hwy 101 From Tacoma: take State Route 16 to Bremerton; take State Route 3 north from Bremerton to State Route 104. From Washington/Oregon Coast connect to Hwy 101 in Aberdeen.

Entrance - Private Vehicle
Valid for seven consecutive days. Applies to private, non-commercial vehicles (15 passenger capacity or less). The pass covers all vehicle occupants.

Staircase Developed Area is Open, Use Caution in Burned Areas Caution
The Staircase developed area is open. The surrounding wilderness areas will remain closed as repair and recovery efforts continue. Use extreme caution when entering burned areas. Burned landscapes may contain falling trees and branches, loose boulders, unstable ground, stump holes, landslides, and debris flows. Hurricane Ridge Road Status 4/21/26 8:20am Information
Hurricane Ridge Road is open to the tunnels (MP8) on the Hurricane Ridge Road. The road is closed to vehicle traffic above the tunnels due to snow and rocks on the road. During the period of March 31 through April 30, Hurricane Ridge Road may open or close depending on road conditions, and weather. Check back here or call 360-565-3131 for updates.
South Shore Quinault Road Washed Out Beyond Park Boundary Information
South Shore Road – which is maintained by Jefferson County – is closed due to a major wash-out. For more information, visit the Jefferson County website.

Sol Duc Road Closed for the Winter Information
The road will reopen in spring 2026.
Mora Road Closed for Essential Repairs Park Closure
Mora Road is closed to all traffic, including bicycles and pedestrians, at the campground. Rialto Beach is not accessible via Mora Road during this construction period. Mora Campground is open. This construction work will repair damage from a severe winter flood event, fortify the road against river migration, and protect long-term access to Rialto Beach.
Hurricane Hill Road Closed Mon-Thurs Through July 2 Park Closure
Due to a water system rehabilitation project, Hurricane Hill Road will be closed Monday-Thursday through July 2. The road will reopen every Friday-Sunday as long as all vehicles continue to clear the area by Sunday evening and do not impede construction activities on Monday morning. Hurricane Ridge Road will remain open throughout the construction period. See the Hurricane Ridge section on the Alerts and Conditions page for more information.
Campfire Restrictions in Place Caution
Due to increased fire activity and dry vegetation, Olympic National Park is implementing fire restrictions. Dispersed and backcountry fires are prohibited. Fires within established metal fire rings in developed campgrounds and picnic areas are allowed. Propane and gas stoves are allowed, if operated at least three feet away from flammable vegetation and forest litter.
Crews Responding to Lightning-Caused Mt. Tom Creek Fire Danger
The lightning-caused Mt. Tom Creek Fire is burning on a remote mountain slope on the west side of Olympic National Park. Fire management officials have ordered aviation and ground resources to respond to the fire, including Type 1 and Type 2 helicopters, enhanced reconnaissance aircraft, wildland fire engines, and hand crews. Backpackers are encouraged to consider alternative routes. There are no evacuation orders.

Kalaloch & Mora Campgrounds Park Closure
In anticipation of an incoming storm, Mora and Kalaloch campgrounds are closed. They will reopen when it is safe to do so.
Graves Creek Road Construction Begins, Expected to Reopen by June 1 Park Closure
Park road crews have begun repairing an eroded section of Graves Creek Road at mile 4.1. Repairs are expected to be complete by June 1. The road is currently open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Ozette Campground Closed Park Closure
Due to flooding, Ozette Campground is currently closed.
Debris on Spruce Railroad Trail Caution
A landslide has left trees, rocks, and earth on part of Spruce Railroad Trail. While most of the trail is passable, a portion is closed west of Camp David Junior Road.
Multiple campground and road closures due to atmospheric river 12/15-12/17 Caution
Multiple campgrounds and roads are closed due to the incoming atmospheric river. High winds and heavy precipitation will increase treefall and flooding risks. Check the Washington State Department of Transportation website for road status updates around the Olympic Peninsula.

Snowshoe with a Ranger

Sign up at the Visitor Contact Station in the Hurricane Ridge parking area at 1:00 pm on the day of the walk.

  • Offered Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 pm at Hurricane Ridge.
  • 1.5 hours, less than a mile, with 130 feet of elevation gain.
  • Beinners welcome! Snowshoes and instructions provided.
  • Dress in layers, wear warm waterproof boots, and bring hats, gloves and sunglasses.
  • First-come, first-served- walks are limited to 20 people.

Note: Walks may be canceled at any time due to operational priorities or safety concerns. For questions about program accessibility or to request specific accommodations, please call park staff in advance at 360-565-3130.

Meet a park ranger at the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center outdoor plaza. Enjoy a 0.8-mile guided walk beneath towering old-growth trees and tapestries of moss as you learn about the Hoh Rain Forest's amazing cast of characters. The trail surface is hard-packed with some stairs and uneven surfaces from tree roots and other obstacles. Please allow 1.25-1.5 hours for this activity.

Beach 4 Tidepool Walk

Meet a Ranger at the Beach 4 parking area and discover the amazing diversity of tidepool organisms.

This walk includes a 0.25-mile trail, taking a staircase (~125 steps) down the bluff, navigating down a large rock, and walking across the beach to the tidepools.

Tidepool exploration involves exposure to coastal hazards including cold water, slippery and loose rocks, and marine life. Waterproof shoes with traction recommended.

Duration: ~1 hour

Walk the short paved trail from the Hurricane Ridge Parking Area to Victoria Overlook. Come prepared with plenty of water, sun protection, comfortable walking shoes and various layers of clothing for inclement weather
