Pecos is a natural and cultural crossroads through which hunters, gatherers, traders, missionaries, immigrants, soldiers, ranchers, and other travelers passed and lived. Follow in their footsteps and imagine Pecos through the centuries. Visit sites where cultural demonstrations and traditional practices continue today - a living legacy of the people who passed this way. At Pecos, past is present.

🌤 Weather Information

Pecos National Historical Park is located at nearly 7,000 feet in altitude in the high desert region of Northern New Mexico. Please know your limits at this high desert altitude. We recommend that you wear clothing appropriate to the season, bring plenty of water, stop for a snack or lunch at one of the picnic tables, wear comfortable shoes, and put on plenty of sunscreen. 🚗 Directions

Pecos National Historical Park is 25 miles east of Santa Fe, New Mexico off of Interstate 25. Visitors travelling north on I-25: take exit 299 on to HWY 50 to Pecos village and south two miles on State Road 63. Those travelling south on I-25: take exit 307 and proceed four miles north to the Park on State Road 63.

Visitor Center Closing at 3:30 pm Park Closure
Due to hazardous winter driving conditions in the area, the visitor center will close at 3:30 pm, Friday January 9. Park grounds will remain open until 4 pm. Please call the visitor center if you have questions about current conditions: 505-757-7241 or check https://nmroads.com/ for New Mexico Department of Transportation updates.
Visitor Center Parking Lot Paving and Repair - Late June and Early July Information
Repaving and repair of the visitor center parking lot will take place in late June and early July, weather permitting. Visitors traveling to the park during this time can expect impacts and delays. Tentative dates are June 22 - July 3 - check back for updates.
Ride Share Services - pickup limited Information
Taxi and ride-share services are often not available in Pecos. Even if services like Uber and Lyft will bring you here, it can be very difficult to secure a ride out. Please ensure you have a departure plan in place before being dropped off at Pecos.
Park Holiday Schedule Park Closure
Park grounds, trails, and visitor center will be closed on January 1. Happy New Year!
Park Closed Due to Winter Storm Park Closure
Due to a winter storm and significant snowfall in the region, Pecos NHP is closed on Saturday, January 24. There will also be a delayed opening on Sunday, January 25 to allow for snow removal operations. The park and visitor center will open at 12 noon on Sunday. Before traveling, check back here for possible updates.
No Ranger-led Programs May 18 Information
There will be no ranger-led programs offered on Monday May 18. Thanks for your understanding. Programs resume on May 19.
Construction delays on highway 63 to impact park access Caution
The New Mexico Department of Transportation is repaving Highway 63, the access road to Pecos NHP. The project finishes around June 11th. Delays entering and leaving the park are likely. Watch for construction equipment and workers. Glorieta Battlefield Trail and South Pasture Loop Trail will remain open. For updated information, call 505-757-7241.

Pecos Pueblo sits at the site of a unique ecological and cultural crossroads. Join a park ranger on this tour to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo, Spanish Colonial history, and the importance of this site to communities today.

The tour begins at the visitor center and covers one mile with moderate elevation gain. Come prepared with warm clothing, water, sunscreen, and good walking shoes. Tours are free, and no registration is required.

Wagons and cowboys and Hollywood, oh my! On this ranger-guided tour, learn about the Santa Fe Trail and area ranching, with stops at the Trading Post and historic Forked Lightning Ranch House.

This tour requires limited walking, but extended periods of standing. Tours meet at the visitor center, and attendees then caravan out to the sites in their own vehicles. Tours are free and no registration is required, although space may be limited to 15 people. 

Unfortunately, the historic road to the ranch cannot accommodate trailers or RVs. Rangers may not take visitors in the ranger vehicle -- visitors must have their own transport.

Forked Lightning Pueblo Hike

Join a ranger at Pecos National Historical Park for a special hiking tour to Forked Lightning Pueblo. Explore the fascinating history of this large 13th-century community, as well as its important role in the history of the field of archeology. Participants should be prepared to hike two miles off-trail.

Tour is free but registration is required up to 2 weeks in advance. Space is limited to 20 people. Call the visitor center at 505-757-7241 or email peco_visitor_information@nps.gov to reserve your spot.

Tours will only take place on March 1 and March 15.
