The Lowndes Interpretive Center is located roughly halfway between Selma and Montgomery along the Trail on U.S. Highway 80 West near Whitehall, AL. The center has exhibits, including interactive exhibits, that tell the story of the history of the Voting Rights Movement, the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March, and the Tent City that housed 20 families over a two year period following the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Visitors may view the film "Never Lose Sight of Freedom" in the theater. -

The Montgomery Interpretive Center is located on the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL. Inside the center, exhibits tell the history of the last leg of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March, the student involvement in the Voting Rights Movement, and the rally that occurred at the City of St. Jude campus the fourth night of the march. A 20-minute film about student protests in Montgomery during March 1965 is available for viewing. -

We are open and located at 14 Broad St.; the parking lot is beside the building. The Selma Welcome Center, operated by the city of Selma, is our temporary space while the Selma Interpretive Center undergoes renovations. You can still find stamps, rangers, restrooms, and a bookstore at this location. The permanent center is located on the corner of Broad St. and Water Ave, and the temporary space is three buildings down. Look for the white "Open" sign on the sidewalk just past the construction fence.

The Lowndes and Montgomery Interpretive Centers are open Monday - Saturday. The Selma Interpretive Center is closed at this time for major construction. The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail Interpretive Centers are closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day annually.

What to expect by season
Depending on the season, temperatures can soar from the extremes of heat and humidity in the summer to damp, wet cold temperatures in the winter. During the summer season visitors should wear light, comfortable clothing, shoes and use sunscreen. High temperatures and humidity create higher risk of heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. During the fall visitors should have a light jacket available as temperatures can drop suddenly. Winter temperatures can be range from mild to extremely cold.
