📘 Park Overview

Before the 1960s, almost everything about living authentically as a gay or lesbian person was illegal. The Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969 is a milestone in the quest for civil rights and provided momentum for a movement.

🚗 Directions

Christopher Park is bounded by Christopher, Grove, and West Fourth Streets. By subway, take the Broadway 1 Line - 7th Avenue local to Christopher Street-Sheridan Square Station; or via the 7th Avenue bus line on the M8 or M20. From Jersey City, take the Holland Tunnel to Ericsson Pl, via exit 3, then take the Avenue of the Americas north to Christopher Street. From Brooklyn take the Manhattan Bridge to Canal Street, then take the Avenue of the Americas north to Christopher Street.

Who threw the first brick at Stonewall? Was there even a brick to begin with? Join a guided walking tour to learn about the history of the Stonewall Uprising and its importance to the gay civil rights movement.

American Sign Language Day
Stonewall National Monument is hosting the second annual American Sign Language (ASL) Day! Rangers and volunteers will be tabling in Christopher Park all day with information, stamps and activities.   There will be free walking tours covering the history of the Stonewall Uprising and gay civil rights movement starting in Christopher Park at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM accompanied by ASL interpreters. There will also be special programming with ASL interpreters inside the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center.
