📘 Park Overview

To Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Vicksburg was the "nailhead that holds the South's two halves together." President Abraham Lincoln remarked "Vicksburg is the key" to victory, and could be the north's lifeline into the south. As the federals closed in on the Fortress City, they were met by a ring of forts with over 170 cannon. The resulting battle would determine the war's outcome.

🌤 Weather Information

Spring and fall in Vicksburg are always very pleasant with cool nights and warm, sunny days with temperatures ranging from lows of 40 degrees to highs of 70 degrees. Winter weather in Mississippi is usually mild except for occasional cold air invasions which normally last only a couple of days. Temperatures range from lows of 30 degrees to highs of 50 degrees. In the summer, weather is consistently hot, beginning in the low 70's and climbing to highs ranging from 80-100 degrees in the afternoon.

🚗 Directions

Plane — Closest commercial airport: Jackson, MS, 50 miles to the east. Car — Directions to Vicksburg: From the east — Take Interstate 20 west to Vicksburg, MS. Use exit ramp 4B. Follow Clay Street (US-80) west 0.25 miles to park entrance. From the north — Take Interstate 55 south to Jackson, MS. To save time, use Interstate 220 bypass on west side of Jackson. Take Interstate 20 west to Vicksburg approximately 40 miles. Use exit ramp 4B. Follow Clay Street (US-80) west 0.25 miles to park entrance.

Adjustments to USS Cairo Museum and Visitor Center Days of Operation Information
Starting October 2, 2024, the USS Cairo Museum will be open 7 days a week and the Visitor Center will be open Wednesday-Sunday. The park grounds, fee booth, Visitor Center restrooms, and tour road will remain open seven days a week.
Thanksgiving Day Closure
Vicksburg National Military Park facilities and tour road will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov 26, 2015. Walking/jogging and bike riding will be permitted. In case of emergency, dial 911. The park will be open normal business hours on Friday, Nov 27.
Louisiana Circle Closed Park Closure
Louisiana Circle is closed to vehicles and pedestrians due to slope instability. Navy Circle is open and also provides views of the Mississippi River.
Illinois Monument Closure - Wednesday, September 24, 2014
The Illinois Monument and immediate area will be closed to all visitors and tour traffic beginning at 8:00 a.m. and remain closed until contractors and lift equipment operators complete necessary measurements required for bat exclusion project work.
Park Closed Due to Severe Weather Park Closure
Due to the impacts of an ice storm, the park and all facilities will be closed Monday January 26, 2026 and will remain closed until park staff can assess any damage and conditions are determined to be safe to reopen.

Grand Illumination Event Information
A Grand Illumination will be held on July 3 from 6-10 pm throughout VNMP. Tour road access is at the Clay St. entrance only and limited to motor vehicles. No pedestrians or bicyclists will be allowed during these hours. Click 'More' for further details.

Due to weather related incidents, Vicksburg National Cemetery is closed to vehicular traffic, however it is open to pedestrians. Visitor can park in the adjacent USS Cairo parking lot and walk into the cemetery.
