📘 Park Overview

Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world's largest gypsum dunefield. White Sands National Park preserves a major portion of this unique dunefield, along with the plants and animals that live here.

🌤 Weather Information

Temperatures at White Sands vary greatly throughout the year. Summer time temperatures can be very hot. Winters are mild with cool evenings. Spring time is the windy season. Fall is very enjoyable with mild daytime and night time temperatures.

🚗 Directions

White Sands National Park is located off of US Highway 70 between the cities of Las Cruces and Alamogordo. The park is about 15 miles west of Alamogordo and 52 miles east of Las Cruces.

Entrance - Private Vehicle
Per vehicle fee is charged to visitors for entry by a single, private non-commercial vehicle. Entrance fees are valid for reentry for seven consecutive days from the date of purchase.

Entrance Passes

Annual Entrance - Park
This pass admits the pass holder and three persons (16 years and older) in a private non-commercial vehicle into the park for free for a period of one year from month of purchase. It can only be purchased at the entrance station to White Sands National Park. This pass does not apply to special use fees, such as camping and interpretive program fees.

Dunes Drive Safety Corridor Park Closure
Dunes Drive is open. A safety corridor is in effect between mile marker 3 and 5.5 along Dunes Drive. Visitors may drive but not stop or exit their vehicle in this area.

No Horse-Riding or Pack Animal Permits Issued Until Further Notice Information
Horse-riding and pack animal permits will not be issued until further notice. Horses and pack animals should not be brought into the park until permits resume.
Interdune Boardwalk Closed Information
Due to the active safety corridor, the Interdune Boardwalk is closed. Please visit the park visitor center to learn about other options during your visit.
High Winds Expected Caution
Wind and blowing dust advisories are in effect February 17-18, with gusts up to 40 mph. Do not hike during a windstorm, and do not rely on your footprints to return to your car. Closely monitor the weather while you are in the park.

Delayed Opening for Park and Visitor Center on Monday January 26, 2026 Park Closure
Due to inclement weather, the park's opening time has been delayed to 9:00 am and the visitor center's opening time has been delayed to 11:00 am on Monday January 26, 2026.
Park Closures Information
From time to time the missile range that surrounds the park performs military testing that may require the closure of the park or Highway 70. Please plan your visit around upcoming military tests.

RV and Tractor Trailer Parking at the Visitor Center Information
There is limited space for parking for recreational vehicles and trailers in the parking lot directly in front (south) of the visitor center. RVs are asked to not park in the lot behind the visitor center. There is no parking space for tractor trailers.

Backcountry Camping Closed Information
Backcountry camping at the park is closed. There is no established opening date at this time.
Park Closed Sunday January 25, 2026, Due to Icy Conditions Park Closure
White Sands National Park will remain closed on Sunday January 25, 2026, due to icy and potentially dangerous conditions.
Dunes Drive reopened to end of road Caution
Dunes Drive is open to the end of the road. Drivers should still watch for icy sections and not exceed the speed limit.

It is a splendid opportunity to experience the dunes first-hand while learning about the uniqueness of our geology, plants, and animals. As an added bonus, the stroll is timed to end at sunset, providing a panoramic view of the sun setting over the mountains and the potential for some breath-taking photographic opportunities.

Location: Meet near the sunset stroll sign parking area, an 8-mile (12.9 km) drive from the fee station. Follow Dunes Drive, staying left at the intersection. The Sunset Stroll begins in the parking lot on the left just after you pass the Backcountry Camping Loop trailhead parking. Look for the signs reading "Sunset Stroll Meets Here."

Location: The Lake Lucero tour begins 25 miles (40.23 km) southwest of the park at the Small Missile Range Gate, located on Hwy 70 West between mile markers 174 and 175. Emergency medical response will be delayed due to the remote location. Emergency services can be up to one hour away. Health concerns should be carefully considered before committing to this hike.
