The Federal Subsistence Board closed sheep hunting to all users on Federal public lands within Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve and Glacier Mountain Controlled Use Areas Units in 20E and 25C due to significant declines to the sheep population. The authority was granted via WP26-76 on April 24, 2026 and the closure with extend through June 30, 2028.

Special Weather Statement issued September 30 at 7:58PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

With widespread colder weather across the Interior, another front
will bring light snow to portions of the area Wednesday night
through Thursday. Generally, around 1 to 3 inches are expected
around the Central & eastern Interior, generally from around the
Fairbanks Metro Area & eastward, although some isolated locations
could receive some locally marginally higher amounts, like toward
the Chena Recreational Area, Chena Hot Springs, the White
Mountains, & Fortymile Country. Take extra precautions when
driving around the Fairbanks area during the Thursday morning
commute as roads may be snow-covered & slippery. Drier weather
returns to the region by Friday.

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and
11 inches.

* WHERE...Eastern Alaska Range.

* WHEN...Until 10 PM AKDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Roads,
and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become
slick and hazardous.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow will quickly begin to accumulate
Wednesday night as temperatures drop below freezing with
moderate to heavy snow falling. Snowfall rates may be as high as
0.5"-1.0" per hour Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Most
of the snowfall will be between MP 205 and MP 235 on the
Richardson Highway.

The area that Yukon-Charley Rivers encompasses is generally classified as sub-arctic, with exceptionally cold winters, relatively warm summers, low annual precipitation, and generally high winds.

Although there is no direct highway connection to Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, visitors are able to access the preserve by either air travel from Fairbanks, or water or air travel from two small towns on the road system(Eagle and Circle), near the preserve boundaries.
