📘 Park Overview

The great Outer Beach described by Thoreau in the 1800s is protected within the national seashore. Forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod's past and continuing ways of life. Swimming beaches and walking and biking trails beckon today's visitors.

Cape Cod's weather is generally moderated by its proximity to the ocean. Winter is typically cold with some snow. Spring is often rainy. Summer is usually warm and humid. Fall is generally dry and clear.

🚗 Directions

The national seashore is located in eastern Massachusetts on Cape Cod and is accessed via Route 6. The park is 20 miles east of Hyannis, MA.

Annual Entrance - Park
Passes are available at beach entrances during times when fees are normally collected. Entrance into the park with a pass may also require a driver's license or other form of picture identification. Valid for the current season. Permits access to any of the six Cape Cod National Seashore beaches. The annual pass allows entrance for the pass holder and additional passengers in a single private non-commercial vehicle, or pass holder plus three adults when entering on foot or bicycle.

There are no lifeguards on duty at Race Point Beach. Swim at your own risk.
Weather Warning: Cape Cod National Seashore Postpones Bike Safety Day Danger
Due to the forecast of rain, thunder, and lightning on July 29, Cape Cod National Seashore has cancelled the Bike Safety Day slated for Province Lands Visitor Center. Staff will seek an alternate date.
Hurricane Erin Beach and ORV Closure Danger
Beaches are experiencing high surf, rip currents, and hazardous swimming conditions. For visitor safety, lifeguards have closed the water to all recreational activities at park beaches. Access to the ORV corridor will be closed at 6 pm on 8/21.
Dark Sky Festival Raindate Park Closure
Due to forecasted thunderstorms on Friday, August 29th, the Star Party at Marconi Beach will take place Saturday, August 30th from 8pm to 10pm. Guest presenter's at the Salt Pond Visitor Center will still take place on Friday.

Demolition of some of the Highlands Center buildings is underway. Due to dangerous conditions, Woods Walk Trail will be closed during the demolition.

A filmed version of the monster hit Broadway play Hamilton, starring the original Broadway cast, including composer Lin-Manuel Miranda. The filming of the performance took place in 2016; it appeared in theaters and on Disney+ in 2020. The musical is based on the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton. The play follows the first treasurer of the United States of America from his arrival in New York City in 1776, through the American Revolution, the government’s founding, until his untimely death by duel in 1804. Rated PG-13 (2h 40m)

Stephen Spielberg’s Lincoln (2012) chronicles the 1865 effort by the sixteenth president to abolish slavery before the end of the Civil War. The film tells the story of the passage of the landmark 13th Amendment to the Constitution and Lincoln’s political gymnastics to convince a reluctant Congress to end the practice of involuntary servitude in the United States. The movie has a stellar cast including Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln, Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens, and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln. Rated PG-13 (2h 30m)

This 1995 film is based on the events of the April, 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission. Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert were nearing lunar orbit when an oxygen tank exploded, threatening their oxygen supply that resulted in the mission being scrubbed. The film follows the crew and NASA engineers as they problem solve to get the crew safely back to Earth. The film stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, the late Bill Paxton and Gary Sinise. Rated PG. (2h 20m)

As campaigning for the 1972 presidential elections takes place, Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward covers a seemingly minor break-in at the Democratic Party National headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. When he attends an arraignment of the alleged burglars, he discovers that top lawyers are already on the defense case. Woodward then discovers ties between the burglars, the attorneys and the committee to re-elect President Richard Nixon. Washington Post Editor Ben Bradley assigns reporter Carl Bernstein to the story and the pair ultimately uncover a trail of evidence leading to President Nixon. The result of the scandal was the first and only  resignation of an American president. The film (1976) stars the late Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. Rated PG (2h 18m)

Bonnie and Clyde (1967) tells the 1934 Depression Era story of the infamous crime duo of Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie Parker, a waitress, and Clyde Barrow, a criminal just released from prison, decide to join forces to embark on a life of crime, holding up whatever establishments, primarily banks, to make money–and to have fun. However, the criminals’ lives change after their first fatal shot is fired. The Barrow gang went on a violent robbery and killing spree–and entered American folklore in the process. The film stars Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. Rated R (1h, 51m)

This 2010 version tells the story of Mattie Ross. Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.—Jim Beaver Rated PG (1h, 50m)
