This is where the nation comes to remember and where history is made. As “America’s Front Yard,” the National Mall and Memorial Parks is home to many of our country’s most iconic memorials telling the story of people and events that shaped us as a nation. Each year, millions of people come to recreate, commemorate presidential legacies, honor our veterans, and make their voices heard.

Washington Monument closed one day each month for maintenance Information
Closures for 2025: Dec 11, 25. Closures for 2026: Jan 8, Feb 3, Mar 4, Apr 6, May 7, Jun 2, July 8, Aug 3, Sep 10, Oct 5, Nov 11,26, Dec 25. The monument is also closed for the Holidays on July 4 and Dec 25 each year.
Old Post Office Tower is Closed Information
The Old Post Office Tower has been closed to the public while the building’s owner, the General Services Administration, determines the future ownership and management of the Old Post Office building, including tower operations and public access. The National Park Service is proud to have operated the tower for the past 42 years, welcoming millions of visitors during that time.
Washington Monument Closed on Saturday, Feb. 7 Park Closure
The Washington Monument will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 7 due to extreme cold temperatures.
Washington Monument is closed on Tuesday, April 7 Park Closure
The Washington Monument will be closed on Tuesday, April 7 due to ongoing issues related to a power outage; the monument is expected to reopen on Wednesday. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Nightly closure of 23rd Street from Independence Ave. to Lincoln Memorial Information
23rd Street SW will be closed to all vehicles between Independence Avenue and the Lincoln Memorial nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for emergency Pepco gas line repairs. The work will begin on Tuesday, March 24 and is expected to take approximately four weeks. For additional information, please contact PEPCO at 202-872--2680.

Lincoln Memorial elevator closed night of April 7-8 Information
The elevator at the Lincoln Memorial, which takes visitors from the ground level to the chamber, will be out of service for maintenance from 11 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7 until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Early closures on the National Mall - March 16, 2026 Park Closure
Due to forecast severe weather, the Washington Monument will close at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26. Additionally, Ohio Drive from East Potomac Golf Links to Hains Point will close at 1 p.m. All visitor services and interpretive programs are cancelled for the afternoon. The World War II Memorial is undergoing a modernization of its fountains and lighting to address aging infrastructure, improve reliability, and enhance the appearance of the memorial. Thomas Jefferson and the Peale Family: Sparking Science and Exploration

President Thomas Jefferson, a scientist as well as a statesman, worked closely with Charles Willson Peale, the leading portrait painter of the Founding Fathers, to advance early American science. As members of the American Philosophical Society, they hosted Alexander von Humboldt, helped uncover mastodon skeletons in New York, and supported major expeditions including Lewis and Clark.
