📘 Park Overview

Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, from 1885 until his death in 1919. During Roosevelt's time in office, his "Summer White House" was the focus of international attention. Explore 83 acres of natural surroundings, historic buildings and trails to become inspired by the legacy of one of America's most popular presidents.

🌤 Weather Information

The Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound moderates the climate of Long Island and Sagamore Hill. Spring: Highs average between 50 F and 70 F. Snow in early March becomes rain by April. Summer: Average highs range between 70 F and the upper 80s F. Summers are drier but thunderstorms are possible. Fall: Highs are from the mid-50s F to the mid-70s F. Fall is the driest season, but showers are possible. Winter: Highs are around 40 F. Snow showers are common; the largest accumulations come in February.

🚗 Directions

Take Northern State Parkway to Exit 35N or the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to Exit 41N. At those exits, take Route 106 North for approximately 6 miles to downtown Oyster Bay. Turn right onto East Main Street and travel 2 miles on East Main Street/Cove Road. Turn left onto Cove Neck Road, drive 1.0 mile and turn right on Sagamore Hill Road, follow the brown signs up the hill and in 0.3 miles arrive at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.

Carriage Road Trailhead Closed to Due Hazardous Tree Park Closure
The Carriage Road Trailhead and portion of the western end of the trail along Sagamore Hill Road is closed due to a hazardous tree. Please observe the marked closure and avoid this area while the tree is removed.
Eastern National Book and Gift Shop Closed Park Closure
The Eastern National book and gift shop will be closed Easter Sunday, 4/5/26. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Nature Trail Closed - Saturday, February 7th. Park Closure
Sagamore Hill Nature Trail will be closed on Saturday, February 7th due to dangerously high winds. We anticipate reopening the trail on Sunday.

Park Closed Due to Winter Weather Conditions and Storm Cleanup Park Closure
Due to accumulating morning snowfall and ongoing storm cleanup work all park grounds, buildings, and tours are closed today.
Park Open on President's Day Information
Sagamore Hill will be open for President's Day, Monday 2/16. The Old Orchard Museum will be open from 12:00pm - 4:30pm, and tours of the Theodore Roosevelt home can be purchased at recreation.gov

Nature Trail Closed Park Closure
The Sagamore Hill Nature Trail is now closed for the remainder of Saturday due to dangerously high winds and the risk of falling trees. We will reassess the danger tomorrow. The rest of the grounds are open and free to enjoy until just after sunset.

Step back in time with the Roosevelts and hear stories about their lives at Sagamore Hill. This will be a 30-45 minute guided walk around the grounds of Sagamore Hill. The tour will begin at the picnic area, with stops at important buildings and places on the Roosevelt property. This walk will take place outside, please dress accordingly and bring water.

Unveiling of New Sagamore Hill Rocking Chairs

Please join us on Saturday, April 25th at 11:00 am for the unveiling of new rocking chairs at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. This event will take place on the front porch of the Theodore Roosevelt home at 11AM. These chairs are inspired by the historic rocking chairs used by the Roosevelt family and are available for public use for all visitors.

Thank you to our official park partner, The Friends of Sagamore Hill, for purchasing and donating these new rocking chairs for all visitors to enjoy.  We hope you'll join us for this unveiling on Saturday, April 25th and we look forward to seeing you there!
