📘 Park Overview

Established by 1750, Ste. Geneviève was the first permanent European settlement in Missouri. Early French Canadian settlers were drawn here by the rich agricultural land known as Le Grand Champ (the Big Field). After the flood of 1785, the town relocated to its present location on higher ground approximately three miles to the northwest of its original site.

The weather in Ste. Genevieve is typical of a midwestern climate. High heat and humidity, severe thunderstorms, snow and ice, and extreme cold are all possible depending upon the season. The average high in July is 88 degrees and the average low in January is 22 degrees. The area averages 41 inches of precipitation annually. Please plan your visit accordingly.

🚗 Directions

From north of Ste. Genevieve (e.g. St. Louis), take I-55 South to exit 150. Follow MO-32 East for about 4 miles. Turn right on Market Street. From south of Ste. Genevieve (e.g. Cape Girardeau), take I-55 North to exit 150. Follow MO-32 East for about 4 miles. Turn right on Market Street. From southern Illinois, you can also take the Ste. Genevieve - Modoc Ferry across the Mississippi. Please visit http://stegenmodocferry.com/ for hours and rates.

River Walk

Join a ranger for a guided Levee Walking Tour! Take a 45-minute stroll atop the Ste. Genevieve Levee and discover the important role the Mississippi River has played in the city’s history. This free, family-friendly tour is recommended for ages 7 and up. The program will start at the Ste. Genevieve Welcome Center, followed by a short caravan to the levee trailhead. No advance reservations necessary. For questions, call 573-880-7189.

History is never just one story—it’s a collection of perspectives, shaped by time, experience, and who gets to tell it. Parallel Pasts: Two Sides to Every Story takes you through the streets of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. Uncover the town’s history by exploring how multiple people experienced the same events in different ways—and how our understanding has evolved over the years. This free hour long walking tour is being offered through a collaboration between Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park and Felix Vallé House State Historic Site.

Postponed! Garden Glow-Up 2026
Volunteer for Garden Glow-Up, our annual garden clean up event at the Jean Baptiste Vallé House (99 S. Main St)! We’ll have some newly planted flowers and garden beds that need some spring cleaning. Enjoy a morning outside and get to know park staff as we work together to make the fresh plants comfortable in their new home!   Garden Glow-Up will be on April 15th, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm. If there is rain or inclement weather, the rain date will be April 22nd.   No experience necessary, but volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Volunteers should wear long sleeves, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and dress for being outdoors. Tools, gloves, and safety training will be provided.
